Dedicated to Christian Excellence

Who We Are

Mount Hope Baptist Church of FaithMount Hope Baptist Church of Faith was founded in 1976 by Bishop Percy W. Maddrey and established, respectfully, by the will of the Lord Jesus Christ. The North Philadelphia planted church soon moved to the Glassboro New Jersey area where it remained for several years before relocating in 1984 to its present 4636 Parrish Street, West Philadelphia site. Mount Hope is a missions focused Christian ministry whose aim is to honor Jesus Christ by helping congregants achieve ‘Christian Excellence’. That term describes Christians who dedicate themselves to reaching the highest possible degree of spiritual maturity and Christ-likeness. Through this standard our families and community are changed for the better, and together are ultimately able to affect the world we live in.

This ministry has been labeled the ‘Love Church’ because of the many acts of kindness shown to people and even to some ministries in their times of need. It has also gained a reputation as a ‘Saving Station’ due to the many people who have gained their spiritual footing or restoration here. From its inception on into the 1990s, the outreach ministry collaborated with government agencies and private institutions to distribute thousands of pounds of emergency food, plus other free goods and services to needy Philadelphia residents.

Since accepting leadership as pastor in 1997, Bishop Richard E. Coates has seen changing times and conditions require Mount Hope to take an all-embracing approach to sharing Christ and doing community outreach. Mount Hope plays an expanded role in helping to improve the lives of area residents by forming stronger more interactive relationships with its neighbors. The ministry leaders direct considerable attention towards helping individuals and families prevent and endure spiritual, social and economic life crises.

The benefits of the powerful worship and teaching that takes place inside the intimately sized building, is shared with the surrounding community outside through our newsletter, neighborhood prayer walks, and by going door to door speaking with residents, and often partnering with them through prayer. The church offers Biblical and pastoral counseling to member, and non-member individuals and families.

The Mount Hope Baptist Church of Faith ministry vision calls for investing a greater amount of time and resources into deterring at risk children and youths from becoming substance abusers and going to prison. The church congregation has begun the process of constructing a 10,000 square foot Mission Center, which will serve as a multi-function space for worship, workshops and outreach operations.

This ministry collaborates with various international Human Relief organizations including the Stand for Africa, through which orphaned children of AIDS and many other victims of poverty are being helped.
